Originally built in 1925​,​ the historic Plunge Pool​,​ was at the time​,​ the largest salt water pool in the world holding 355​,​000 gallons of water. The 60 foot by 175 foot pool was designed after the Spanish Renaissance-style buildings in Balboa Park built in 1915 and 1916. The pool was converted to fresh water in 1940​,​ when it then became the largest indoor heated pool in Southern California. Newly renovated in 2019​,​ the aesthetics reflect floor to ceiling windows and a retractable roof​,​ allowing swimmers to enjoy the warm San Diego weather all year long.
